Martial Classes are Next!
With Ancestries and Backgrounds done, the next item in alphabetical (and development) order are the Classes. The two martial classes (Frenok and Thanator) are up first. There’s still some finalisation to be done, but the invocation classes will need a big list of invocations for them to be fully analysed, so these two are first on the docket.
I’m also experientmenting a bit in this preview: what if, instead of separate 5e and Pathfinder 2 versions, there was one Ashen System, a blend between both, familiar to players, but customised to the setting? This draft experiments with that idea, having Apprentice, Expert, and Master as the three levels of a skill (instead of the two in 5e or four in PF2), and Novice as untrained/not proficient. Let me know what you think here or on the Discord server.
New Terms for The Broken World
We’ve been talking about the ‘common phrases’ article for the new setting guide. Here’s three more to think about:
Clatters. The currency of Pherot is made of fired clay discs instead of cast metal, so it makes a distinctive sound on the table or in the pouch of a person. This is a slang term like we might use ‘quid’ or ‘bucks’.
Damp. Almost all of the world is made of dry and desolate desert, so to be damp about something is to be excited, for any reason. ‘He’s damp about the arena fight tonight’ is a common usage.
An Iron Promise. The strength and resiliency of metal is remembered, even though the Ash destroyed much of it. So an Iron Promise is one you don’t ever intend to break, even if it causes you much trouble.
The Vyrkolat
The undead that arose from the death of the Ashfall will be a focus next month, as promised last week. Look for more news on them soon.

Just a short newsletter this week, as I’m still super busy with everything.
